  1. What kind of equipment do you rent?
Every year we purchase new ATV’s to provide our guests with the best equipment for their money. Our fleet for 2008 includes one of the best machines on the market. The Can Am Outlander Max 400 EFI. This stellar machine is 4WD, has the most horsepower in its class, is two-person capable, and outperforms every other ATV on the market. Our 2WD machine is the Yamaha Grizzly 350, which is also an excellent machine with full size tires, excellent clearance, and lots of horsepower. This machine can go just about anywhere the 4WD Outlander will go. Its only drawbacks are that it is only designed for one person and it may have some limitations in deep snow or mud. New this year is the Polaris Ranger Crew 700 UTV. This machine drives like a car with a steering wheel and foot pedals. It is wider than an ATV and capable of taking 6 people and their cargo. It has a bed similar to a truck that can carry fishing poles, coolers, back packs or hunting gear. This is an excellent machine that the whole family can go out in. Because of its width, it is not allowed on the Lily Lake trail system, but can be ridden on the hundreds of miles of trails on the North Slope Road.

  1. Do I have to trailer machines to the trailhead?

No. The Bear River Lodge is located on the Wasatch – Cache National Forest boundary and trailhead. Simply show up at the Lodge, rent your machine and ride. No hassles loading, unloading and trailering to the trailhead.

  1. How old do I have to be to drive an ATV?

Utah state law requires any drivers of an OHV to be 16 with a valid driver’s license. Learner’s permits are not legal. There are some exceptions. Some children can receive a state issued OHV certificate by completing a state course. Our policy allows children 14 – 16 with a valid OHV certificate to drive a 2x4 machine only, and a legal parent or guardian must accompany the child at all times. No exceptions.

  1. Can I have a passenger on a 2wd ATV?

No. Our 2WD ATV’s are designed only for a single driver. If you have a passenger you must rent the 4WD Outlander or the Polaris Crew UTV.

  1. How old do passengers have to be to ride?

It is not so much a matter of age as it is of size. On the Outlander ATV’s, a passenger must have the ability to reach and hold onto the passenger handgrips and their feet must reach the footrests. Generally kids between the ages of 6-8 meet this criteria. If they do not, you may want to consider the Polaris Crew UTV.

  1. I am unfamiliar with a UTV, can you tell me a little about it?

A UTV is a multi passenger Utility Vehicle where the driver and passengers sit side by side. It is capable of carrying a diverse load. It drives like a car or truck in that it has a steering wheel and foot pedals that control the brakes and gas. It has a bed capable of carry a variety of items. It is quite a bit larger than an ATV and because of its width it is not allowed on all of the trails near the Lodge. There are approximately 50 of the 400 miles that the UTV is not allowed. Over the past few years UTV’s have become increasingly popular. To take a closer look, go to our ATV page and right click on the picture of the UTV and select

  1. Should I rent a full day or half day?

With over 400 miles of trail accessible from the Lodge, there are plenty of trails and terrain to take up multiple days, so the choice is yours. However, early spring and late fall when there is still snow at the upper elevations, we do recommend half day rentals due to the fact that many of the upper elevation trails are under snow. This limits the accessible terrain during these times of year. If your not sure, just ask, and we’ll let you know what the current trail conditions justify.

  1. What is the evening rental?

Due to the longer summer days, we offer a half day evening rental. For our Lodging guests and nearby cabin owners and campers, you can pick up an evening rental at 5 PM and keep it until 8:30 the following morning. For those not staying in the area, you can simply return it at our closing time. The evening rental is one of my favorites because the temperatures are a little cooler and the wildlife are more active. Deer, Elk and Moose are commonly seen during an evening rental. For those renting equipment for 2 or more consecutive days, we offer the evening rental at a discounted rate of $30 for a 2WD, $40 for a 4WD and $60 for the UTV. This is an extremely good value.

  1. How long does it take to check out an ATV?

Most cases 15 – 30 minutes. Please remember that this is INCLUDED in your rental time. Larger groups sometimes take a little longer. The more organized and prepared your group, the quicker we can get you on the trail.

  1. Are there any additional accessories needed with the ATV / UTV rental?

We require a DOT approved helmet for all renters. Ski helmets are not DOT approved. If you have one bring it. If not we have a selection of new helmets every year for a $5 per day rental.

  1. Is there insurance available?

No. But we do have a damage agreement you can purchase. Damage agreements can be purchased for $16 per ATV per day or $25 per day for the UTV. Once purchased the purchaser is then limited to paying only up to $800 for damages to an ATV or $1000 for the UTV. In other words the limits are similar to a deductible and would be the max out of pocket for damages. Damage agreements cover damages to the machine it was purchased for only. It does not cover personal injury, other people’s equipment, loss revenue (down time) or recovery costs. There are also ways to void the damage agreement, so make sure to read our waiver before heading out. Damage agreements are highly recommended.

  1. Is it important to make a reservation?

Reservations are always highly recommended. Even if we have a lot of availability a few days before always make a reservation. There are many times we book up a couple days out and if you just show up you may not get a machine. Do remember that a deposit is required for all reservations and is non-refundable. Additionally you will want to make sure you agree to the terms of our cancellation policy.

  1. How far is the Bear River Lodge from Salt Lake and Park City?

We are a short 2 hours from most Wasatch front locations and 75 minutes from Park City. Please remember that from November – mid June the mirror lake highway is closed and you must access us through Evanston, Wyoming. Please click here for directions or call us at 435-642-6289.
